A lot of states have looked at legalizing online poker. The state of Nevada is ready to go once the U.S. says its okay. They have everything in place. Other states such as California and New Jersey as well was Washington, D.C. have had major pushes, you could say “all-ins,” by various lawmakers who want to make online play legal in their region.

The Wire Act

The U.S. Department of Justice seemed to help clear the way for online poker by stating that the Wire Act did not pertain to the card game but that the law was concerned with sports betting.

U.S. Department of Justice has lessened the scope of the Wire Act.

The Wire Act prohibits gaming across state lines and was seen as being a major hurdle to online poker.

Although there have been intense lobbying efforts of the U.S. Congress for well over a year by the Poker Players Alliance and Fair Play U.S.A. and some pretty solid support from leading lawmakers, an Internet poker bill seems to be far off.

Illinois the Poker Hub?

State Senate President John Cullerton suggested on Tuesday that his state, Illinois, work towards becoming the major hub for online poker. He put forth a proposal for Internet gambling with just about two weeks left until the state senate adjourns.

In a letter to the governor and legislative leaders, Cullerton noted, “Certain forms of iGaming, especially poker, rely on large pools of potential players, and states that move swiftly to design a system that captures the widest audience of participants will have an advantage in terms of long-range success.” He also said, “The goal is to make the state nimble enough to adjust to new Internet gambling approaches.”

The senator wants to get the ball rolling before the legislature adjourns, which, considering the opposition such bills have faced in other jurisdictions, seems farfetched. However, his point is noteworthy in that when and if the U.S. passes an online poker bill, Illinois may be precluded from reaping the benefits unless they clearly state ahead of time that they are for online gambling. Cullerton does not want his state left out in the cold when it comes to sharing in tax revenues.

Speedy Opposition

Patty Schuh, spokeswoman for Senate Republican leader Christine Radogno of Lemont, said, “If you allow Internet poker to be sanctioned by the state of Illinois, there are a whole lot of questions that need to be answered. Being first isn’t necessarily a good thing.”

The state recently started selling lottery tickets online. Since that began in March, those sales have brought in $1.8 million. There are plans also to expand gaming at racetracks by adding slot machines.

Illinois Governor Quinn has his hands full with budget problems.

Governor Pat Quinn was tightlipped regarding the proposal as he struggles to balance his budget while dealing with rising costs of health care for the poor and public employee pensions.

No Quick Fix

Many states see online poker as a way to balance the books. But there’s no quick fix as it will take years to implement any legislation that eventually says online poker can be enjoyed by Americans without fear that a site will be closed down and without the hassles that now exist when players attempt to make a deposit.

A loose player can benefit you.

If you’re a tight player and you find yourself in a loose game, then you’re in poker heaven. A loose game is one where a large percentage of the players are playing a majority of their hands. Many of these hands are marginal and some are just simply weak.

In this article, we’re going to consider how to recognize a loose game and how to take advantage of the players in it. In order for this strategy to work, you’re going to have to be a disciplined tight player, switching back-and-forth from being aggressive to being passive.

Recognizing Loose Games

The most telling sign that you’re in a loose game is that over a series of hands a large number of players tend to stay in through the flop. Often you’ll immediately notice this tendency during the first hand, and then after three to five hands, the loose players are confirmed.

Some players will play these cards consistently.

Try to recognize the truly loose players—those who will play hands just for the sake of playing hands. These are people who think they aren’t in the game unless they are betting and raising. There are two ways to identify these players consistently.

The first is their tendency to be in every hand. No matter what, that player is in and stays until the flop and often through to the river. They may fold at that point but by then a chunk of their cash is in the pot.

The second way is when loose players reveal their cards at the end of a round. Even if they win, they often win with a weak pair. You really get to know a loose player by the hole cards they keep.

In order to take full advantage of loose games, you must pay attention to every part of the game. It doesn’t matter if you’re in or out of a hand, stay in the ebb and flow of the contest.

Position and the Loose Player

Hopefully, you are to the left of the loosest aggressive player at the table. If you are, you’ll be able to control your game much more effectively as you can read their wager first and get out before the hand gets out of control.

What about loose passive players?

Your poker hand to win.

They tend to be what are often referred to as “slow bleeders.” The loose passive player will be in almost all the time and as soon as raises start to multiply, they are out. Position is useful but not as important when playing against them.

Loose Games and Winning

To win in an average game against loose players, you’re going to see the flop in about 30% of your hands. Overall, if you play only with strong to moderately strong hole cards and manage the flop well, you’re going to set yourself up to beat loose players.

Stay in hands where you have two suited face cards, an A-K unsuited and any pair from 7s through As. You will also want to stay for the flop if you have unsuited K-Q Q-J, and J-10. Don’t stay for anything else. You’ll be short stacked in no time.

Once you see the flop, determine if it’s worth staying in the hand. If you’ve got the hand won at that point, then take full advantage of the loose aggressive players, raising their raises. If you’re on the edge with 10 or more outs and two cards to go, try to stay for the turn.

After the turn, if you’re being pushed to the limit, carefully read the cards and the players. If the percentages are in your favor, then stay. After the river, the same holds true. If you’ve been paying attention and analyzing each player properly, you’ll know exactly where you stand.

Loose Game and Big Winnings

If you’re a smart, knowledgeable player who can read the table and take advantage of situations, then loose aggressive players are your prey. They can be your cash cow. However, never underestimate any player at your table. Always be mindful of each and every player’s move and decision. Doing so will enable you to stay in the game and be the last player at the table.

How many bad flops and beats are out there?

If you do anything long enough, you’re going to find that no matter how good you are you will eventually have a bad run. This may be due to something you’re doing or it may have to do with chance occurrences. In this article we’re going to take a look at some of the things you can do when you have a bad run at the poker table.

Types of Bad Runs

There are two types of bad runs—those that occur in the course of one game and those that happen over the course of numerous games and sometimes many days. Both can be extremely frustrating as it seems that the poker gods, fate and every poker player on Earth is conspiring against you.

You play your hands according to the book, you’re repeatedly beaten on the river and when you have a great hand everyone folds. Then you start to get hole cards that are 9, 2 and 8, 2 or worse. Is there anything worse? There are hands that you dropped out of, such as when you were holding a 9, 2, that turned into winning full houses. In other words, you can do nothing right.

Sit Out a Hand or Two or Three

Although people will often say that sitting out a few hands won’t change a thing because cards are dealt randomly, the fact is that taking a short break allows you to simply study the table objectively without anything at stake. You can clear your head, recharge your battery and get a new perspective.

Play Only High Hole Cards

Play nothing but high pairs and A, K. You can also play two unmatched high cards. That’s it. Stay away from hunches, bluffing or trying to be intimidating.

Aces may help?

Simplify and play an extremely disciplined game. If anything, the consistency of your play will allow you to better analyze exactly what’s happening in terms of your bad run and it may help you break your losing streak.

Keep Your Sense of Humor

This is not easy to do. But you do need to keep your perspective and realize that no matter how seriously you take it that poker is, after all, a game. You probably have a lot of great things going in your life. Review them and let them give you a lift.

Also, sometimes you just have to laugh at the absurdity of it all. Here you are playing good poker and losing consistently. It helps to share your amazement at your bad luck with a fellow poker player. Call or email a friend and tell them what’s going on; swap stories. It does help when someone else has had the same misery in their life and if you know someone else who plays poker regularly then they have definitely had bad runs.

Take Out Your Frustration in a Positive Way

Hopefully you have something that you can do that will help you relieve the stress and frustration. Do you enjoy playing a musical instrument, working out or cooking? Make it a positive activity that will get things out and make you feel great.

Go to Bed and Come Back Later

Fold them and walk away. Walk away for a few days or maybe even a week or more. You’ll be amazed at your new perspective when you do come back to the poker table. Basically what you’re doing when you take an extended break is you’re taking some time to simply let everything go. Yes, even poker players need a vacation and the best time to take one is when you’re losing consistently.

Why Are You Playing Poker?

Bad runs can really get you thinking and one question you should consider is why you are playing poker. Hopefully, you’re playing because you love the game, you enjoy learning and you thrive on the competition. If that’s true, then know that at some point when you come back to the table you’re going to have fun and win again. Keep working on your game, be able to let things go and remember that this bad run will, as does everything else, pass.

For Holdem poker players to be successful they must possess mental strength. Every expert agrees to that fact. But what does “mental strength” mean? We can say it includes being tough, resilient and adaptive. These are a few aspects that define mental strength. Let’s consider how a strong mental nature, a characteristic that you find in all winners, can be a huge asset for any poker player.

Staying in the Moment

One aspect of mental strength is the ability to stay focused on the task at hand to let go of all distractions in your life and at the poker table. In any type of competitive endeavor, those who remain attached to the game make the fewest mistakes.

Staying in the moment mentally means you are analyzing the ebb and flow of each hand, including every bet, check, raise and fold. You’re reevaluating your situation and everyone else’s after you get your hole cards and see the flop, turn and river.

How often have you been going along, making all of the correct moves and then you make a gross miscalculation because you misread the flop and the fact that the player who kept raising you had a full house that outmatched your trips?

Fearlessness

If you’re a passive player, it probably means that there’s a certain amount of fear that you have regarding failure. If you find yourself folding on hands that you could have won if you had stayed for one more card, you probably want to whip up some extra courage like the Cowardly Lion did in The Wizard of Oz.

By being fearless a player isn’t careless or pushing the bluff all the time, but they are studying the cards and deciding to take an educated risk on certain hands. In low stakes games try to build up a fearless streak by staying in hands a little longer than you might. You won’t always win but at least you’ll develop a sense of when you should look the other player in the eye and call their raise.

Letting Go

You made a mistake and played a hand you should not have. You made a mistake and didn’t play a hand you should have. You didn’t make a mistake but you got beat on a fluke turn of the river. All of these things and more can drive a player to distraction and cause them to lose even more hands if they can’t let go of their latest mishap.

If something goes wrong, you should make a note regarding what you did and if you should have done something differently and then let go of the anger, frustration and disappointment. Refocus on the present hand.

By the way, the opposite of this scenario is also true. You won a big hand and drew someone into an ambush. You won a hand when you looked beat for certain on the turn and the river. You just made another player go bust. These events can cause extreme euphoria, make you feel invincible and make you forget what you’re doing. Great that you won that one; celebrate for 10 seconds and then let go. Stay in the present.

Come Back Kid Skills

You’re down to almost nothing and there are a few players at the table who can crush you. Okay, it’s time to get very tough. Don’t get down and don’t get even. What you want to do is play very few hands, waiting to go in for the flop only when you have a high pair, suited high cards or unsuited high cards. You’re not beat until you are out of the game. So stay in it to the very end and you could be the last one standing.

Stamina

When you’re playing Texas Holdem in a long game or big tournament, you’re going to need mental stamina. Some tournaments go on for six, eight, ten or more hours and they can drain your brain. There’s no two ways about it if you can’t develop an ability to sustain yourself mentally, you’re going to make mistakes that will take you out of the game.

Play when you are rested and focused. Never play when you are tired, distracted, angry, drunk or mentally impaired in anyway. All of these things wear you down and out mentally.

The Brain Game

To win the game of Texas Holdem, you must win the brain game. There are two such games to win. One is against the other players. You have to be smarter, more skilled and mentally tougher than they are to win. The other brain game, and you have to win this one first, is the one inside yourself where you build confidence, fearlessness, mental acuity, stamina and amazing control. One way of another, Texas Holdem is a mental game.

Here are some common mistakes that players make when engaging in online poker play. They actually apply to those times when you’re sitting at a real green felt table. After all being a calling station, bluffing and chatting are all dangerous activities when it comes to preserving and expanding your chip stack.

Going in on Too Many Hands

Many beginning players think they aren’t playing poker unless they are in the hand. Of course this isn’t true. Often players are doing more when they are out of a hand. They’re observing other players, practicing good money management and conserving their funds for when they have strong cards and can really use them.

When playing Texas Holdem, those who tend to do well see the flop somewhere between 20% and 30% of the time. They do so holding quality cards or middling cards after a majority of the players fold or in playing the power inherent in the late position.

Don't play these hole cards

No, you don’t have to have a high pair to see the flop. But you do need something that will give you some power over the course of the hand. That can be a tall chip stack, a late position that gives you an edge in the betting or two suited face cards.

Bluffing or Playing too Aggressively

Although these two behaviors are related, they are not the same thing. Bluffing is basically pushing the bet up with higher and higher raises in an attempt to create the illusion that you’re holding a quality hand when you have garbage. This tends to backfire in Texas Holdem since there are so many community cards in play that an astute player can usually figure out if you have them beat. There are times when you can get away with a bluff in Holdem, but this tends to be when you’re playing from a play position and everyone else has checked.

Do you really want to bluff on a bad flop?

Playing too aggressively is a bit different. Usually the over aggressive player is holding something decent, such as a medium pair, and they decide to raise too much too early, only to see someone overtake them on the flop or turn. Over aggressive play can knock you out of a game very quickly.

Poor Chip Management

Poor chip management is related to over aggressive play, bluffing, playing weak to medium pairs to the hilt and seeing too many flops, but it is more a function of mathematics than anything else.

One reason for poor management is that when you play online the chips and the money don’t seem as real as when you play at a casino. That’s because you never really feel the chips when you’re in cyberspace and when you purchase chips it all happens electronically. Sure you’re playing for money but you never really see it.

Don’t waste your chips on long shots. Play high percentage hands. Be wary of going all in. You may have two kings when someone challenges you but if they have an ace and a king, there’s a chance they’re going to beat you by the time the river comes around.

Chat

Are you here to play poker or chat? Chat can be distracting, taking you away from the game that is ongoing. Stay away from chat. If you want to chat then participate in a play money game where nothing is at stake.

You’re Always Learning

With any type of competitive game, you should always be learning. Although you’ll make mistakes when you first start playing online poker if you assess and learn from them, you’ll be on your way playing like a pro.

Black Friday occurred a little over a year ago, putting the online poker world in disarray and leading to the overall demise of Full Tilt Poker and the exit of PokerStars from the American market. Although it seemed as if it totally banished online poker play for real money in the U.S., the fact is it did not stop people in America from playing poker on the Internet. However, it certainly had a huge impact on the U.S. market and also on the world of Internet poker and gambling. Here’s a considered of some of the major changes we’ve seen over this past year.

American Poker Expats

There has been an exodus of professional players who made their living in the U.S. by playing online. Some have moved to Costa Rica, others to Canada and still others to Europe. Basically these players were in search of a friendly place where they could ply their trade.

The folks who created and run the poker forum PocketFives helped develop a relocation service called Poker Refugees, which worked to help players find a new place to live. Using a real estate agent that one of the owners of PocketFives, Adam Small, knew in Costa Rica, Kristin Wilson, they were able to set up the service.

U.S. States Try to Legalize Online Poker

With the U.S. in a huge economic slump, legislators in various states started to look into legalizing online gambling in their states to collect new tax revenues or being prepared for the day that the federal government legalized the activity. Nevada got laws all in place to be ready for the magic day when the feds finally give the okay, while New Jersey and Washington, D.C. attempted to make online poker legal. The feds were against the moves by those two jurisdictions and they were met with opposition and debate within those areas of the country. There was also a lot of controversy in states such as New York and California regarding Native American tribes and their inclusion or exclusion from the online market.

Poker Players Alliance

The lobbying group known as the Poker Players Alliance (PPA) became a lot more active, pushing federal lawmakers to enact legislation that would make online poker legal. Again, the feds like the states eyed new tax money they would get from licensing that could be used to keep the government afloat. But despite various bills,

"Poker Players Alliance is leading the way for online poker in the U.S.

including the Barton Bill, which was sponsored by representative Joe Barton (Republican, Texas), seemed to be promising, the massive lobbying effort by the PPA was met with opposition and had a tough time moving forward.

Online European Sites Aligning with US Casinos

Various European online poker sites started to make deals with casinos and states to secure a foothold in the U.S. market, anticipating the day when they could launch U.S. sites. The reason foreign entities tried to align themselves with U.S. based companies had to do with the fact that they would have a much easier time getting a license if already established in the U.S.

AG Redefines the Wire Act

There was great debate regarding the Interstate Wire Act of 1961. At first, it seemed as if this law, which bans making bets across state lines through electronic means,

The DOJ has redefined the Wire Act

pertained to poker and online casinos. But near the end of 2011, the Department of Justice said that it was only concerned with sports betting. This was seen as a major move towards opening the door for online poker.

Little Progress

Still, there has been little progress in the U.S. towards making online poker legal. It will take years before U.S. players see legal sites. However, people are still playing online at sites such as Lock and Carbon Poker. There are various poker rooms that accept American players and although it is near impossible to make deposits using a debit or credit card, many U.S. players use wire services to transfer cash into offshore poker accounts. The day will surely come when online poker thrives in the U.S. But when that will happen is unknown.

The World Series of Poker has announced a new high roller event that has a $1 million buy-in. Right now there are 30 players confirmed for the huge game, including the likes of Johnny Chan, Tom Dwan, Erik Seidel and Daniel Negreanu. Along with those topnotch pros, there are various high stakes players who are looking forward to participating, including various billionaires such as Cirque du Soleil founder and tournament organizer Guy Laliberte and casino owner Phil Ruffin.

The Poker Prize

At this point this high stakes event is offering a top prize of just over $12 million but it could reach more than $18 million as there may be up to 48 players putting up one million each. But will this be the largest prize ever? Because the first prize looks to be at least $12.3 million, the answer is “Yes.”

It will just beat out the 2006 WSOP Main Event prize of $12 million that was won by American Jamie Gold. That was a $10,000 buy-in and there were considerably more people in the field—8,700 playing No Limit Holdem. The next biggest prize offered was the 2010 WSOP Main Event, which saw Canadian Jonathan Duhamel win just over $9.7 million.

One Drop Benefits

Although there is a huge prize pool, the event has also been created in order to help raise cash for a specific charity. Some of the buy-in cash will go towards helping One Drop, which is a charitable/environmental cause focusing on solving the clean water crises and ensuring that everyone has access to this essential liquid.

The WSOP $1 million buy-in event will benefit One Drop

The event’s name, which is “Big One for One Drop,” reflects this connection. Laliberte created the charity. As noted, he is the Cirque du Soleil creator and founder of this new event. He has arranged to have $111,111 from each $1 million entry go towards the charity. With the present number of entries One Drop will receive $3.3 million in donations.

The Take by Poker Pro Negreanu

It will be interesting to see how many players do play and what sort of atmosphere ensues with so much at stake. This could help to reinvigorate the Americas versus European rivalry. One thing poker pro Negreanu believes is that it will not overshadow the WSOP Main Event.

Daniel Negreanu will play in the WSOP special event

He observed, “I don’t think this is something that’s everlasting and they’re going to do every year. It’s just a very different, unique event. It’s nothing like the Main Event.” Negreanu also added, “It’s obviously a historic event. Basically I’m mostly doing it to support Guy Laliberte and the charity and also the fact that I think it’s going to be good (poker) value. You’re going to have a bunch of guys who are just rich and aren’t really professionals.”

ESPN Coverage

This unique poker event will be covered by ESPN. The sports station will offer live coverage of the final table. When the winner is declared they will get the cash and a platinum bracelet that has been specially designed for the event. Of course to enter one must be a major player in some way, either at the poker table, in the world of commerce or in some other manner. The “Big One for One Drop” event is scheduled for July 1-3 at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas and will be event No. 55 at the WSOP, which features a total of 61-events.

Before you go into any poker game, it is vital that you familiarize yourself with the terminology. Doing so will not only enable you to play more successfully, but you will also appear more experienced to your opponents than you actually are, thus decreasing the chances they will take advantage of you.

Though there are thousands of poker terms that are used and these depend on the game in which you are playing, it is essential that you start with getting to know the ones that are the most common. To get you started, it is fitting that you learn the ten terms below.

Big blind–A big blind is when the larger of two forced bets are chosen. A big blind can only apply to specific poker games, such as Texas Hold’em and Omaha.

Small blind–A small blind is usually half of the big blind and is the smaller of two forced bets. The small blind also pertains to specific types of poker games, like the ones mentioned above.

Act–An act is when it is a player’s turn to do something in the game, such as play or fold.

All in–This is when a player puts all of his or her chips into the game – this player is thus said to be going “All-in”. A rather risky move, which usually more showy than practical in a poker game.

Of course, this move makes the game much more interesting – everything is much more interesting when your entire bankroll is at stake.

Collusion–Collusion occurs when two players or more work together to cheat in a poker game. We do not recommend this – where’s the fun in cheating?

Downswing–A downswing occurs when a player goes through a time period in which he or she loses much more than he or she has intended. It is also the opposite of an upswing.

Boxed card–this is a card that is facing upward while the cards are being dealt. Much of the time, these cards are treated as though they never existed, thus they are placed aside and not used for the game. Different poker houses have different rules concerning these. Some may completely ignore them, allowing them to be used. It is advantageous that you check with the poker house at which you are playing to see what their rules are regarding these card, so as to avoid any fouls or disqualifications

Straight–A straight occurs when all of the cards are in a consecutive order from least to greatest. An example of a straight is from ten to ace.

Buck–A buck is a marker that is used to make determinations concerning which player will deal the cards or who is the last to act.

Busted–This term has two meanings, and the meaning that will apply all depends on the situation. Busted can either mean that a player has busted out of all of his or her chips, meaning that all of the chips have been lost. Or, it can also mean that a player has a hand of cards that needs one final card to complete it; however, the card is lacking. An example of being busted in this instance is when you have four cards that are in a consecutive order, and you just need one more card to form a straight.

Once you become familiar with these ten terms, you can then go on to learning more. These are just a point from where you can begin to build your knowledge about the games to facilitate success.

The law is open to interpretation and a recent revision by the US Department of Justice (DoJ) of its interpretation of the Wire Act has changed the way in which states may participate in the legalization of online poker. In closing down and controlling poker rooms this past year, the DoJ has called upon the power of two specific laws: the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) and the Wire Act.

US-based online poker could be a reality soon

Poker and the UIGEA

The fact is it is not illegal to play poker online in the U.S. But through the UIGEA it is illegal for any bank, financial institution or other such money exchange service to facilitate the transfer of funds outside of the country or to a foreign-based company for the purposes of gambling. It’s under this act that Poker Stars, Absolute Poker and Full Tilt Poker were raided on April 15, 2011, and prohibited from operating in the U.S.

When the DoJ enforced the UIGEA many other poker rooms simply left the U.S. market, fearing that they too would be shut down. This greatly reduced the number of sites that were friendly to U.S. players, causing many professional players to move for foreign countries that were open to online gaming.

The Wire Act

The UIGEA was enacted in 2006, but the Federal Wire Act, which is also known as the Interstate Wire Act, is a much older law. It came into being in 1961 and was developed to stop bookmaking across state lines. The law is fairly wide-ranging in terms of culpability.

It states, “Whoever being engaged in the business of betting or wagering knowingly uses a wire communication facility for the transmission in interstate or foreign commerce of bets or wagers or information assisting in the placing of bets or wagers on any sporting event or contest, or for the transmission of a wire communication which entitles the recipient to receive money or credit as a result of bets or wagers, or for information assisting in the placing of bets or wagers, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than two years, or both.”

Although the DoJ had maintained that it included online poker and casino gambling and that the use of computers fell under aegis of the act, they recently revised one part of that interpretation, ruling that the “interstate transmissions of wire communications that do not relate to a ‘sporting event or contest’ fall outside the reach of the Wire Act.”

The Department of Justice eliminated online poker from the Wire Act

The means the Wire Act does not cover online poker. However computers, which were not being used in homes for the sharing of information until well after the act was created, are considered to be one of the modes of transmission covered. The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals has ruled in agreement with that interpretation but the Supreme Court has not as of yet offered an opinion.

States Gearing Up

With the new interpretation came a burst of energy amongst Nevada’s legislators who immediately enacted legislation to take advantage of the new online gaming opportunity. Expect to see more states getting involved in online poker legislation, as the large U.S. poker market has been virtually untapped since Black Friday. The DoJ’s announcement is big news for online poker and U.S. players.

According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, one of the longest serving congressmen in the nation will continue to work on trying to get online gambling legalized. Barney Frank, a Democrat from Massachusetts, will be ending his legislative career when his term expires in 2012. One of his most highly publicized issues has been online gaming, of which he is an ardent supporter.

Freedom

Image via Wikipedia

Barney Frank, and his other congressional allies, believes that online gambling is an issue of personal freedom. Currently, there are severe restrictions on the rights of US citizens to participate in online gaming of any type. In fact, there are currently court cases against online gaming establishments, due to the heavy-handed restrictions placed upon them by the US government.

When the Internet first became a viable consumer medium, online gambling was one of the first uses to which people put it. In the United States, opponents of gambling have managed to successfully shut it down in the nation. Frank, however, and other senators and representatives who share his view that citizens should be able to decide for themselves whether or not online gaming is for them, continue to work on the issue and are optimistic that they should be able to get Congress to approve online gaming in the United States.

According to the article, Harry Reid (D-Nev) is also working on the issue. There are numerous congresspeople who are supportive of the idea of legalizing online gaming in the United States. Currently, however, The House Financial Services Committee, which Frank formerly chaired, is chaired by an Alabama Republican, Spencer Bachus, who opposes online gaming. This hasn’t dissuaded the supporters of online gambling from trying to get action taken on the measure. Partnerships between Frank and both Democratic and Republican congresspeople give supporters hope that US gamblers will soon enjoy the same freedom that most people around the world enjoy.

Pushing Forward

There are different proposals being debated among Congress members regarding how online gambling should be regulated, if it is made legal. Some proposals also recommend making certain types of online gambling legal, but not all. For example, Texas Republican Joe Barton supports a measure to legalize online poker, one of the most popular online games and, potentially, one of the biggest money makers if it were regulated like other forms of gambling.

While Barney Frank may be retiring, online gambling still has plenty of advocates in Congress. The difficulty will be getting measures through committees that are headed by people who ardently oppose gambling of any sort. If these hurdles are overcome, it should only be a matter of time before residents of the United States are able to enjoy the freedom to use the Internet to enjoy gambling at any one of the many different establishments that have been set up for it. Online gambling is already a huge industry in Europe and one of the most popular pastimes among a wide variety of people from all different walks of life. In nations where it is legal, it is regulated and safe.
